The NCP Diaspora Alliance UK mourns the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and a towering figure in the nation’s political history. Her death marks the end of an era defined by resilience, democratic struggle, and an unyielding commitment to her convictions.

Begum Khaleda Zia

Begum Khaleda Zia rose to national leadership during a critical phase of Bangladesh’s democratic journey. She played a decisive role in the restoration and consolidation of democracy, guiding the nation through a hard-fought struggle against autocratic military rule in the 1990s. From a “shy housewife” who stepped forward to fill the void left by her late husband, former President Ziaur Rahman, she went on to become Bangladesh’s first female prime minister, then a two-time prime minister, and finally—during an era when the country plunged into fascism—a beacon of hope and an unrelenting voice for the people, at great personal cost.

Throughout her long public life, Begum Zia was known for her steadfastness in adversity. She endured years of political persecution, personal loss, and ill health, yet remained a symbol of resolve for millions who saw in her a voice against authoritarianism. Her political career inspired generations—particularly women—demonstrating that leadership at the highest level was attainable despite formidable barriers. While her legacy will be assessed with the nuance and debate that any consequential leader invites, there is no denying her place in history as one of Bangladesh’s most influential political figures. She embodied a distinct chapter of popular politics and left an indelible imprint on the nation’s democratic struggle.

On behalf of the Bangladeshi diaspora in the United Kingdom, the NCP Diaspora Alliance UK extends its deepest condolences to her son, Tarique Rahman, the rest of her family, her colleagues and supporters, and the people of Bangladesh. We honour her memory and pray that she rests in peace.
